CLIMBING TO JATILUWIH - THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE

Bali is not only about the beach, surfing and sunbathing. Believe me, Bali is faaaar more than those 3 things. I can say that Bali is a total package of pleasure, where you can find sand and greens with a mixture of rich culture that you can never ever see in any other island. If you are only familiar with Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Nusa Dua.. it means you only explore a tiny part of this island. You shoud go more to the north, east and even west of this island to explore more about Balinese tourist destination and culture.
If you are going a little bit to the west, I recommend you to go around Jatiluwih area and you will find the famous rice terrace there. But this time I will bring you there not with a car, or motorbike like has been famous in Bali... because I will bring you there with my own bike! YEAY!

Jatiluwih Rice Terrace is the UNESCO World Heritage located in west part of Bali, Indonesia. This place has been so famous lately to be one of tourist destinations. And I tell you, it is a home for cyclists. With a snacky paved road and steep climbs, this is perfect location for cyclist to have a nice climb.

I started my route from Seminyak area. It was around 100km round trip from Seminyak to Jatiluwih, with total 1,000 elevation gain. Jatiluwih itself is located in 1,060 meter above sea level. Not that hight, I know. But the road along the way to get there ain't easy at all. Don't forget that I need to also go through the high temperature of the weather along the way to get there. But believe me, it's all worth it.

One of the perks going to Jatiluwih by bike is, we can enjoy every little corner of Balinese beautiful culture. Like what I saw on that day, the local people gather around the neighborhood to roast 1 big pig into a beautiful Babi Guling. Gosh, I got hungry by the time I crossed that neighborhood lol. But yeah, I need to continue my way to Jatiluwih.

When you got there, don't forget to also visit The Rustic Bali, located right next to the "JATILUWIH" symbol. The foods, service and of course the view are really amazing. All is green because this cafe is located in the middle of paddy fields. It is also surrounded by mountain views, if you are lucky enough to get there when the sky is clear. It was superb!

| Tips to get there by bike |
  • Make sure you start not more than 6 a.m. unless you'd like to have an over sun exposed. I left Seminyak by 6 a.m., reached Jatiluwih around 9 a.m., then took some time to eat and rest and The Rustic Bali for 1 hour, and I reached Seminyak again around 12.30 at noon. The traffic when I got back to Seminyak was pretty bad at that time, so make sure you don't rest too long at the Jatiluwih.
  • Have your own road captain and I suggest to have the local one, because there are a lot of road to get there. You have to make sure which way fits you well, depends on your body condition and your bike type as well.
  • Lastly, prepare your extra sunblock on your pocket!! I did re-apply thousands time during my way there. LOL
